Teeth Whitening

The darker tissue of our teeth, called “the dentin,” can become exposed through the everyday wear and tear of our enamel. This wearing away of our enamel is directly connected to the food we eat, the drinks we drink, and even our age.

Over time, teeth become even more prone to staining and unfortunately no amount of flossing or brushing can change the damaged enamel.

One type of staining, often caused my injuries or certain medications, can even begin inside the tooth, making brushing with whitening toothpaste and a rigorous
flossing and mouthwash routine unable to prevent staining from occurring. Although most staining occurs from particular foods and beverages, it is often impossible to change our eating and drinking habits completely.

Since we simply cannot eliminate all sources of staining, many of our clients rely on tooth-whitening procedures to reverse the damaging effects that age, food, beverages and tobacco provoke.

While many believe that “whitening toothpastes” are effective in removing stains and making teeth visibly whiter, many of these products contain damaging chemicals that often wear away tooth enamel, especially for those with sensitive teeth and gums. This wearing away of the enamel leads to more dental problems which often require a more drastic intervention. Moreover, these whitening products do not take away all types of stains, such as the brown or gray stains many of us wish to get rid of.

Dr. Runne’s dental office in Rockford offers methods of professional whitening that are safe, effective and guaranteed to make your smile radiate! Moreover, professional whitening, if done correctly, can last up to three years.
